Spontaneous Regression of a Symptomatic Lumbar Facet Synovial Cyst in One Month
نویسنده
چکیده
Lumbar facet synovial cysts are common benign lesions arising from zygapophyseal joint capsule and are thought to result from chronic degeneration. They are usually asymptomatic. With the increasing use of magnetic resonance imaging in daily practice, the incidence of synovial cysts has also increased. While it is not very common, when they are symptomatic, they are generally treated by percutaneous needle puncture or surgical resection. There is still some controversy amongst clinicians on the management of symptomatic cysts. In this report we describe a rare case of 63-year-old male patient suffering from left leg pain caused by a L5-S1 left facet synovial cyst which regressed spontaneously in one month with no surgical intervention.

Spontaneous resolution of symptomatic lumbar synovial cyst
Lumbar synovial cyst arises from the facet joint and can lead to back pain, radiculopathy, neurogenic claudication or even cauda equina syndrome. Although most surgeons would consider surgery to be the treatment of choice, the natural history of the disease process remains unknown and uncertainty still exists regarding optimal management of this controversial entity. We illustrate a case of lar...

Pseudogout of the lumbar facet joints is rare. We report on a 69-year-old woman with 2-level symptomatic synovial cysts of the facet joints caused by calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition. She underwent surgical decompression for sciatica and low back pain. At one-year follow-up, she had recovered completely.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT Lumbar facet joint synovial cysts are benign degenerative abnormalities of the lumbar spine. Previous reports have supported operative and nonoperative management. Facet joint steroid injection with cyst rupture is occasionally performed, but there has been no systematic evaluation of this treatment option. PURPOSE To profile the role of facet joint steroid injections with ...
متن کاملRadiologic recognition of symptomatic spinal synovial cysts.
Synovial cysts of diarthrodial joints have long been recognized [1]. Clinically, they have most often been found in association with one of the arthritides [2,3]. Though synovial cysts can involve the facet joints of the spine, this fact was little appreciated until very recently [4, 5]. Radiographically, these lesions were extremely difficult to diagnose and were rarely recognized preoperative...
